Tied - Lift Off Official Selection

"Tied" is a short film about a young Sudanese man in his early 20s born, raised and lives abroad. During the 2018 Sudanese Revolution, he was actively engaging in the protests virtually through social media in an attempt to contribute by raising awareness via platforms like Twitter. As many people in his generation, he was heavily relying on Twitter to stay up to date on events that were ongoing back home. He felt like it tied him to protesters on the ground and the demonstrations all together at once while being thousands of miles away. Despite his complete immersion, he feels alienated by the screen, and frustrated by his inability to be in Sudan during this historical youth-led movement, which ultimately affected him as well. But his despair soars as he watches the barbaric events of the Khartoum Massacre live-streamed off of a protester's phone. Tied examines the paradoxical connection and disconnection to Sudan experienced by the diaspora.
